John Deere 735.06 – Rear Chassis Module (PTQ): The Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amps Are High

Issue description

The transmission controller continuously measures the current draw from the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. When the system logs 'Amps Are High,' it means the circuit is drawing more electrical current than the specified limit. This condition typically indicates a short circuit (either to ground or to a +12V power source) in the wiring harness, or an internally shorted solenoid coil.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running between the Rear Chassis Module (PTQ) and the transmission control valve block for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or areas where the wire might be shorting to the tractor's chassis (ground) or another power wire.

  2. Disconnect the reverse clutch solenoid and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent pins that could cause a bridge or short.

  3. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the pins of the reverse clutch solenoid itself. If the resistance is extremely low or reads as a dead short, the internal coil has failed.

  4. Clear the code and perform an operational test by shifting the tractor to neutral, then to forward (high or low), and back to reverse. If the code returns immediately upon commanding reverse, the fault is hard-set and actively shorting.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the machine

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Ensure the tractor cannot move during testing.

  2. Resolve wiring issues

    If diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the affected harness pigtail.

  3. Replace the solenoid

    If the solenoid coil failed the resistance test, remove the retaining bolt or clip holding the reverse clutch solenoid to the transmission valve block. Remove the faulty solenoid and install the replacement, ensuring the O-rings are properly seated and lubricated with clean transmission fluid.

  4. Clear codes

    Reconnect the wiring harness. Turn the key on and use the onboard display or John Deere Service ADVISOR to clear the 00735.06 fault code.

  5. Calibrate transmission

    After replacing a transmission clutch solenoid, perform a clutch calibration procedure to teach the controller the new clutch fill times and ensure smooth engagement.
