John Deere 736.05 – PTR, PTP, PTQ, or PTI: Main Control Module Has Noted An Issue With The Supply Voltage To The High Forward Clutch Solenoid

Issue description

The .05 Failure Mode Indicator (FMI) signifies "Current Too Low" or an "Open Circuit." The control unit has detected an open circuit or insufficient current draw at the signal input for the transmission solenoid valve (specifically the High Forward Clutch, C3 Clutch, or Reverse Brake solenoid). Because the circuit is open, the solenoid cannot actuate, which prevents the transmission from engaging the corresponding gear or clutch pack.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing. Inspect the wiring harness and the Metri-Pack connector leading to the High Forward / C3 solenoid for physical damage, chafing, or corrosion.

  2. Test for Open Circuits: Disconnect the solenoid. Use a digital multimeter to check the wiring harness for continuity back to the PTR/PTP module. Repair any broken wires.

  3. Check Voltage Supply: Turn the key to the ON position and verify that the electrical supply voltage to the solenoid connector is within the correct 12V operating range.

  4. Ohm Test the Solenoid: Measure the resistance across the pins of the solenoid coil itself. If the multimeter reads "OL" (Open Loop) or infinite resistance, the internal coil has failed and the solenoid must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and remove the key.

  2. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the transmission control valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system when the valve is removed.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty solenoid valve.

  4. Removal

    Remove the retaining bolt or nut securing the solenoid valve to the manifold block. Carefully pull the solenoid valve straight out. Note: Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of transmission/hydraulic fluid will leak out.

  5. Lubricate

    Coat the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean John Deere Hy-Gard transmission fluid to prevent tearing during installation.

  6. Installation

    Insert the new solenoid valve into the block, ensuring it seats fully. Install and tighten the retaining hardware to the OEM torque specification.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  8. Test

    Start the tractor, allow the hydraulic fluid to warm up, and test the transmission by shifting through the gears (specifically High/Forward). Clear the stored 000736.05 code from the dash or via a diagnostic tool and verify it does not return.
