John Deere 736.06 – PTD: Transmission Clutch Control Solenoid Current Too High / Short to Ground

Issue description

The control module has detected an excessive electrical current draw on the circuit for this specific transmission clutch solenoid, which is typically caused by an internally shorted solenoid coil or a wiring harness that has rubbed through and shorted directly to the chassis ground.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the transmission wiring harness from the PTD module to the transmission valve block for pinched wires, melted insulation, or rubbing against the chassis.

  2. Disconnect the affected clutch solenoid and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent terminals.

  3. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the pins of the suspect solenoid. A reading of 0 ohms or significantly below OEM spec indicates an internal short.

  4. With the solenoid disconnected, check the power supply wire for continuity to ground. Continuity indicates a shorted wiring harness.

  5. If the valve block uses identical proportional solenoids, swap the suspect solenoid with a known good one from an adjacent clutch circuit to see if the fault code follows the solenoid.

Repair steps

  1. Park the machine on a level surface, engage the park brake, lower all implements, and turn off the engine.

    Ensure the machine is safely parked and secured before beginning work.

  2. Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the system.

    Depressurize the hydraulic system to prevent fluid spray or injury.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    This prevents accidental electrical spikes during the repair.

  4. Locate the transmission control valve manifold on the side of the transmission housing.

    Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoids to prevent dirt from contaminating the hydraulic system.

  5. Disconnect the electrical harness from the faulty clutch solenoid.

    Carefully unplug the connector from the solenoid.

  6. Remove the retaining bolts or snap ring securing the solenoid valve to the manifold.

    Free the solenoid valve from its mounting.

  7. Carefully pull the solenoid valve assembly straight out.

    Remove the faulty valve from the manifold.

  8. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean John Deere transmission fluid.

    Ensure the new O-rings are properly lubricated for installation.

  9. Insert the new valve into the manifold and tighten the retaining hardware.

    Tighten the bolts or snap ring to the specified OEM torque.

  10. Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery.

    Restore electrical connections to the solenoid and the machine.

  11. Start the tractor and allow the transmission fluid to reach operating temperature.

    Warm up the system to prepare for calibration.

  12. Clear the fault codes and perform a transmission calibration procedure.

    Perform a fill pressure rate calibration via the cab monitor or John Deere Service Advisor tool to ensure smooth clutch engagement.
