John Deere 736.06 – PTQ: Gear Selector Clutch K1 Solenoid Amps High

Issue description

The controller detects that the electrical current (amperage) flowing to the K1 (or Y3) transmission speed control solenoid is excessively high. This condition is almost always caused by a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness or an internally shorted solenoid coil.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the transmission wiring harness routing from the PTQ controller to the transmission valve block for rubbed insulation, pinched wires, or melted loom that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Disconnect the harness at the K1/Y3 solenoid and check for fluid intrusion, corrosion, or damaged pins.

  3. Measure the resistance across the pins of the K1/Y3 solenoid coil using a multimeter. OEM specs dictate approximately 10.5 ohms; if resistance approaches 0 ohms, the coil is internally shorted.

  4. Perform a swap test by exchanging the K1/Y3 solenoid coil with an adjacent, identical transmission speed solenoid (such as K2/Y4). Clear codes and operate the machine to see if the fault follows the solenoid or remains with the circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Park the machine on a level surface, lower all attachments to the ground, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorts and to reset the modules.

  3. Clean the area around the transmission control valve block thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  4. Locate the K1 (Y3) solenoid on the transmission valve block.

    Refer to the specific machine's hydraulic schematic; they are usually stamped or tagged Y1 through Y6.

  5. Disconnect the electrical plug from the solenoid.

  6. Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid stem and slide the electromagnetic coil off the cartridge valve.

    If the cartridge valve itself is leaking or sticking, unscrew the entire cartridge from the valve block. Have a catch pan ready for minor fluid loss.

  7. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid/cartridge with clean John Deere transmission fluid.

  8. Install the new solenoid, tighten the retaining nut to OEM torque specs, and reconnect the wiring harness.

    Do not overtighten, or you will distort the cartridge.

  9. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and check for leaks.

  10. Clear the stored PTQ fault codes and test drive the machine through all gears to verify the repair.
