John Deere 737.06 – PTD, PTQ, PTP, or VCU: Proportional Solenoid Valve for Clutch for Side Shaft 1, Current Too High

Issue description

The control software detects that the electrical current at the lead of the proportional solenoid valve for Clutch 1 (or the Y4 transmission speed solenoid) is exceeding the maximum threshold. This almost always indicates a short circuit (internal short within the solenoid coil or a wiring harness short to ground), causing the control software to limit or disable transmission functions to protect the circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the Clutch 1 (Y4) proportional solenoid valve for rubbed-through insulation, pinched wires shorting to the chassis, or melted connectors.

  2. Test the solenoid valve resistance by disconnecting the solenoid and using a multimeter to measure across the coil pins. A reading near zero or significantly below the OEM spec (typically 4-10 ohms) indicates an internal short.

  3. Check the harness side of the connector for continuity to ground on the power supply wire to determine if the harness is shorted between the PTD controller and the solenoid.

  4. Verify the PTD or VCU control unit is not outputting excessive current due to an internal module fault (rare compared to harness or coil failure).

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Park the machine on a level surface, lower all implements, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery. Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the transmission system.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission control valve block. Identify the Clutch 1 (Side Shaft 1) proportional solenoid valve. On construction models, this is identified as the Y4 Solenoid.

  3. Disconnect and Inspect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid. Clean the area around the valve to prevent dirt from entering the transmission housing.

  4. Replace the Solenoid

    If tested faulty: Remove the retaining nut or bolts holding the solenoid coil/cartridge in place. Carefully pull the solenoid valve out of the manifold. Lubricate the O-rings on the new proportional solenoid valve with clean John Deere hydraulic fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications.

  5. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic tests pointed to a wiring short: Trace the harness back to the PTD module. Cut out the damaged section of wire, solder in a replacement segment, and seal it with dual-wall heat shrink tubing.

  6. Reassembly and Testing

    Reconnect the solenoid wiring harness. Reconnect the battery. Start the machine and use a diagnostic tool (like Service ADVISOR) to clear the 000737.06 code. Test drive the machine through all gears to ensure the clutch engages smoothly and the code does not return.
