John Deere 739.06 – PTQ: Transmission Control Solenoid High Current or Short Circuit
Issue description
The controller is detecting that the electrical current flowing through the specified transmission solenoid circuit exceeds the maximum allowable threshold, usually pointing to a short to ground, a short to power, or an internally shorted solenoid coil.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness from the PTQ/PTP module to the transmission control valve block for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short to ground
Disconnect the harness at the H2 (C-D) / D-Clutch solenoid and check the pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage
Measure the resistance across the pins of the solenoid coil using a multimeter (typically around 40 ± 5 Ω). If resistance is near 0 Ω, the solenoid is internally shorted
With the solenoid and the PTQ module disconnected, test the signal and return wires for continuity to ground to verify if the harness is shorted
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, lower all implements, and turn off the engine.
Relieve Pressure
Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the transmission system by cycling the controls (if applicable) and allowing the system to cool.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the transmission control valve block (usually on the side of the transmission housing). Identify the specific H2 range (C-D) solenoid, D-Clutch valve, or Y6 solenoid depending on your machine.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty solenoid.
Removal
Clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the transmission. Remove the retaining bolts or snap ring securing the solenoid to the valve block. Pull the solenoid straight out.
Installation
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic fluid. Carefully insert the new solenoid into the valve block, ensuring the O-rings are not pinched.
Secure
Reinstall the retaining hardware and tighten to the OEM torque specification.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back into the solenoid.
Test
Turn the key on, clear the PTQ 000739.06 fault code via the monitor or Service ADVISOR, and start the machine. Test the transmission by shifting through the ranges to ensure smooth operation and verify the code does not return.
