John Deere 84.19 – RPT: Incorrect CAN BUS Message, Wheel Speed from BCU

The receiving control unit fails to get a valid wheel speed signal over the CAN BUS network. The BCU transmits a message stating the sensor is either not available (due to incorrect software configuration) or faulty (due to a physical circuit problem, open circuit, or short).

   Verify via the tractor's monitor or Service ADVISOR that the BCU is correctly configured to look for a wheel speed sensor (incorrect software configuration can toggle the sensor off).

   Inspect the B09/B35 wheel speed sensor (located on the transmission/rear axle housing) and its wiring harness for torn wires, chafing, or mud/debris packing.

   Disconnect the sensor and check for water intrusion, bent pins, or corrosion inside the connector.

   Test the sensor's resistance with a multimeter. If the sensor tests fine, verify the continuity of the wiring harness between the sensor and the BCU to rule out a broken wire.

   Prepare tractor for service

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

   Locate sensor

   Locate the wheel speed sensor on the transmission housing or axle drop (location varies slightly by chassis size).

   Disconnect sensor

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

   Remove retaining bolt

   Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place.

   Remove old sensor

   Carefully pull the old sensor out of the housing (have a rag ready, as a small amount of oil may weep depending on the mounting angle).

   Lubricate new sensor

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission/hydraulic oil.

   Install new sensor

   Insert the new sensor, install the retaining bolt, and tighten to OEM torque specs.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness securely.

   Clear code and test

   Turn the key on, clear the 000084.19 fault code from the RPT/BCU modules, and test drive the tractor to ensure the speedometer registers ground speed correctly and the code does not return.
