John Deere 84.31 – PTF: Wheel Speed Sensor Missing On CAN BUS / Vehicle Speed Mismatch

Triggered when the control software detects an open circuit to the wheel speed sensor, or when there is intermittent or nonexistent reception of CAN BUS messages regarding wheel speed. This is often detected when the Brake Control Unit (BCU) reports a wheel speed that is slower than what the main controller has registered, or when the signal drops out entirely. It results in the system transmitting a replacement (default) value and limiting the functionality of traction-dependent systems.

   Check for other active codes that might indicate a broader CAN BUS failure or a module voltage issue (e.g., PTF 000158.04).

   Locate the Sensor

   Identify the wheel speed sensor on the wheel hub or axle housing.

   Inspect and Clean

   Disconnect the sensor plug. Clean the connector contacts with electrical contact cleaner and inspect the wiring harness (especially lead 5001) back to the chassis module.

   Test the Circuit

   Use a multimeter to check for continuity in the wiring harness between the sensor connector and the PTF/BCU to rule out an open circuit in the chassis wiring.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the wiring is intact and the connector is receiving proper voltage, the magnetic pickup wheel speed sensor has likely failed internally and must be replaced. Remove the retaining bolt, pull the old sensor out, and install the new OEM sensor.

   After replacing the sensor or repairing the wire, perform a reset of the control module to clear the error codes.

   Operate the tractor to verify that the wheel speed data is accurately communicated to the ECU/PTF and that the fault code does not return.
