John Deere 84.31 – RPT: Missing Wheel Speed Message / Wheel Speed Sensor Malfunction
Issue description
The control software detects an open circuit to the wheel speed sensor, or there is a communication failure on the CAN BUS regarding the wheel speed message transmitted from the Brake Control Unit (BCU) to the Engine Control Unit (ECU). The system detects that the wheel speed reported is either missing, intermittent, or slower than what the ECU has registered, causing the system to transmit a replacement value which significantly limits or disables the functionality of the control software and traction-dependent systems.

Check the cause
Check the CCU (Central Control Unit) for other active error codes, as CCU codes take priority and should be diagnosed first.
Inspect the wheel speed sensor wiring harness (especially lead 5001) for open circuits, chafing, or disconnections.
Examine the CAN BUS connectors between the BCU, ECU, and RPT for loose pins, moisture, or corrosion that might interfere with communication.
Verify the wheel speed sensor is correctly installed, seated properly, and configured to John Deere specifications.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.
Repair Wiring
If damage is found in the wiring harness (especially lead 5001) or the CAN BUS connectors, repair the open circuit or replace the damaged connector pins.
Replace the Sensor
If the wiring is intact but the open circuit persists, the wheel speed sensor itself has failed internally. Remove the mounting bolt, pull the old sensor from the hub/axle housing, and install the new OEM wheel speed sensor.
Reconnect and Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 000084.31 code from the RPT, CCU, and ECU.
Recalibrate and Test
Recalibrate the sensor if required by the specific tractor model's service manual. Perform a test drive to verify that ground speed readings are accurate and the fault code does not return.
