John Deere 876.14 – ATC: Compressor Shutoff Due to Engine Overheat

This is an informational/protection code indicating that the air-conditioning compressor clutch was intentionally switched off by the climate control system because the engine is overheating. By disabling the A/C compressor, the system reduces the mechanical load on the engine and decreases the heat rejected by the A/C condenser into the radiator airflow, helping the engine cool down. The compressor will automatically be allowed to switch on again as soon as the recorded coolant temperature drops by at least 5°C.

   Check for primary Engine Control Unit (ECU) codes related to high coolant temperature. Diagnostic trouble codes indicating engine overheating take priority.

   Check the level, condition, and service interval of the engine coolant.

   Visually inspect the radiator, A/C condenser, and front grilles for blockages caused by dirt, dust, or crop debris.

   Inspect the water pump, radiator, and coolant hoses for visible leaks.

   Cool Down

   Stop the tractor, turn off the engine, and allow the machine to cool down safely. Do not open the radiator cap while the engine is hot.

   Clean the Cooling Package

   Using compressed air or a pressure washer (carefully, so as not to bend the fins), blow out the radiator, oil cooler, and A/C condenser. Blocked airflow is the most common cause of this code during heavy field work.

   Top Off Fluids

   Once cooled, check the coolant reservoir. If low, top it off with the recommended 50/50 premix coolant.

   Mechanical Diagnosis

   If the radiator is clean and the coolant level is full but the engine continues to overheat, you must diagnose the mechanical cooling components. Test the engine thermostat (to ensure it is opening) and the engine coolant temperature sensor (to ensure it is reading accurately).

   Clear and Reset

   Restart the engine. There are times the code can be corrected by resetting the communication messages when the tractor is restarted. The ATC module will automatically restore A/C function once the engine coolant temperature drops by 5°C.
