John Deere 91.14 – ECU (Engine Control Unit): Hand Throttle Signal Voltage Issue Out Of Range

Triggers when the control module detects that the voltage signal coming from the hand throttle rotary position sensor (potentiometer) falls outside the expected normal operating parameters (often out of range high). When this occurs, the controller may inhibit throttle response or default to a safe idle speed.

   Inspect the hand throttle module wiring and connectors for loose pins, corrosion, or physical damage to the harness.

   Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage from the ECU (typically a 5 Vdc reference measured between the positive and negative pins at the sensor connector).

   Check the signal wire back to the ECU for a short to power, short to ground, or an open circuit.

   Perform a sweep test by monitoring the sensor's signal voltage while slowly moving the hand throttle from low idle to high idle, looking for erratic voltage spikes, drop-offs, or dead spots.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

   Access the Sensor

   Locate the hand throttle rotary position sensor, typically mounted directly to the base of the hand throttle lever assembly in the cab console.

   Remove the Faulty Sensor

   Unplug the wiring harness connector. Remove the mounting screws securing the potentiometer to the throttle lever linkage and remove the sensor.

   Install the New Sensor

   Mount the replacement rotary position sensor, ensuring the mechanical linkage aligns correctly with the sensor's internal sweep mechanism. Secure the mounting screws.

   Reconnect

   Plug the wiring harness back into the sensor and reconnect the battery.

   Calibration

   Perform a throttle calibration procedure via the machine's onboard diagnostic monitor or by connecting the John Deere Service ADVISOR tool to calibrate the low-idle and high-idle voltage limits.
