John Deere 94.04 – ECU: Low Pressure Fuel Sensor Voltage Too Low

Issue description

The signal voltage from the low-pressure fuel sensor has dropped below the normal operating range (typically below 0.4V), indicating a short to ground, an open circuit in the sensor wiring, or a complete internal failure of the sensor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the low-pressure fuel sensor for chafed wires, melted insulation, or a short to ground. Disconnect the sensor and check the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins.

  2. With the key ON and engine OFF, use a multimeter to verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage (usually 5V) and has a good ground.

  3. Tee a mechanical fuel pressure gauge into the outlet of the fuel filter/low-pressure lift pump to verify actual fuel pressure against OEM specs to rule out an actual severe low-pressure event.

  4. Check and drain/replace the fuel filters and water separator to ensure no mechanical starvation is compounding the issue.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to protect the ECU.

  2. Clean the Area

    Locate the low-pressure fuel sensor (typically near the fuel filter housing or lift pump) and clean the surrounding area to prevent dirt from entering the fuel system.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground or broken wire in the harness, repair the damaged section using weather-sealed butt connectors or replace the pigtail connector.

  4. Replace the Sensor

    If the wiring and reference voltage are good, the sensor itself has failed internally. Unplug the electrical connector, unscrew the old sensor, and install the new OEM sensor. Torque to OEM specifications.

  5. Prime the System

    Turn the key to the ON position for 30-60 seconds to allow the electric lift pump to prime the fuel system and purge air.

  6. Clear Codes

    Access the machine's service menu or use a diagnostic scan tool (like Service ADVISOR) to clear the inactive 000094.04 code.

  7. Test Run

    Start the engine and run it at various RPMs to ensure the code does not return and the machine does not derate.
