John Deere 96.03 – CCU: Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Voltage High

Issue description

The control unit detects an unusually high voltage from the fuel level sensor circuit. A high voltage reading typically indicates that the fuel level is outside the normal range due to an open circuit or a short to a 12-volt power source. This condition results in inaccurate fuel level readings and degraded system functions.

Check the cause

  1. Check the B176 fuel level sensor and its harness connector for signs of physical damage, corrosion, or loose pins.

  2. Examine the wiring harness running from the sensor to the CCU for exposed wires, chafing, or pinches that could cause a short to a 12V power source or an open circuit.

  3. Turn the key switch to the RUN position (engine off) and use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the fuel level sensor connector to verify if it is receiving the correct reference voltage (usually 5V) or if it is shorted to 12V.

  4. Disconnect the fuel level sensor at the fuel tank and test the resistance across the sensor's terminals while manually moving the float arm to verify if the sensor has an internal open circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable

    This prevents electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Locate the fuel level sensor (B176)

    The sensor is located at the top of the fuel tank.

  3. Disconnect the wiring harness

    Disconnect the harness from the fuel level sensor.

  4. Repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness

    Perform this step if the diagnostic tests revealed a wiring issue such as a short to power or a broken wire.

  5. Remove the faulty fuel level sensor from the tank

    Perform this step if the wiring is intact but the sensor failed the resistance test. Clean the mounting surface to ensure a good seal.

  6. Install the new fuel level sensor

    Ensure the gasket/O-ring is properly seated to prevent fuel leaks.

  7. Reconnect the wiring harness

    Reconnect the harness to the new sensor.

  8. Reconnect the battery and verify the repair

    Turn the key to the RUN position, and verify that the fuel gauge reads accurately and the 000096.03 code clears or goes from 'Active' to 'Stored'.
