John Deere 97.03 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Water In Fuel Sensor Out Of Range High

Issue description

The voltage signal returning from the Water-in-Fuel (WIF) sensor to the controller is exceeding the upper limit specified for normal operation. This condition typically indicates an electrical circuit fault, most commonly an open circuit (such as a disconnected sensor), a broken wire, or a short to a high-voltage power source.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection of the Sensor Connection: Check the primary fuel filter/water separator to see if the WIF sensor is simply unplugged.

  2. Wiring Harness & Connector Check: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the WIF sensor. Look for signs of copper corrosion inside the connector pins, bent pins, frayed wires, or rub points where the insulation has worn through against the engine block.

  3. Voltage Testing: Using a digital multimeter, back-probe the sensor connector while the key is on. Verify the ECU is sending the correct 5V reference signal to the sensor, verify the ground pin has a solid path to ground with zero resistance, and check the signal wire.

  4. Fuel Filter Check: Check the fuel filters and fuel tank level for excessive water.

Repair steps

  1. Reconnect the Sensor

    If the diagnostic check revealed the sensor was unplugged, plug it back in. This alone will often resolve the 97.03 code.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the harness is damaged, repair the broken wires or replace the corroded pigtail connector to restore the circuit.

  3. Replace the WIF Sensor

    If the wiring is intact and the sensor is receiving 5V and ground but outputting an out-of-range high signal, the sensor is faulty. Place a drain pan under the primary fuel filter, drain the fuel/water separator to prevent spills, unscrew the faulty WIF sensor from the bottom of the filter housing, and install the new WIF sensor (ensure the O-ring is seated properly).

  4. Filter Maintenance

    If the fuel filter is due for service or heavily contaminated, replace the entire fuel filter element at this time.

  5. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 000097.03 / SPN 97 FMI 3 code from the ECU.

  6. Verify Repair

    Start the engine and monitor the diagnostic display to ensure the code does not return.
