John Deere 97.04 – ECU: Water-in-Fuel Filter Signal Voltage Low
Issue description
The input voltage from the water-in-fuel sensor is below the lower limit specified for low sensor voltage. This condition typically indicates a short to ground within the sensor's circuitry. A low voltage signal prevents the sensor from accurately detecting water presence in the fuel, which can risk engine health if water passes through the system undetected.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Inspect the water-in-fuel sensor (mounted on the primary fuel filter/water separator) and its wiring harness thoroughly. Look for signs of wear, damaged insulation, or corroded connectors that might contribute to a grounding problem.
Electrical Circuit Test: Use a multimeter to evaluate the electrical circuit for faults. Check for a short to ground in the signal wire between the sensor connector and the ECU.
Grounding Check: Ensure that the sensor and its circuitry are properly grounded and isolated from potential sources of electrical interference.
Filter Check: Drain the fuel filter/water separator to check for actual water or debris that may be fouling the sensor probes.
Repair steps
Drain the Filter
Turn off the engine. Place a catch pan under the primary fuel filter/water separator and open the drain valve to empty the fluid.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic tests revealed chafed wires or a short to ground in the harness, repair or replace the damaged wiring section and replace any corroded connector pins.
Replace the Sensor
If the wiring tests good, the internal circuitry of the sensor has likely failed (shorted to ground). Disconnect the electrical connector from the water-in-fuel sensor. Unscrew the old sensor from the fuel filter housing. Install the new OEM sensor and tighten to the manufacturer's specification.
Prime the Fuel System
Turn the key to the ON position to allow the lift pump to prime the fuel system and fill the filter.
Clear Codes and Test
Reset the engine control system using a diagnostic tool to clear the 000097.04 fault code. Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and that there are no fuel leaks around the new sensor.
