John Deere 97 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Water In Fuel Continuously Detected
Issue description
Triggered when the Water in Fuel (WIF) sensor detects that the water level in the primary fuel filter/water separator bowl has reached a critical threshold. If the sensor circuit voltage rises to a level outside the normal operating range, it can also trigger this code, indicating either severe water contamination or a circuit failure.

Check the cause
Connect to the diagnostic software (DST or John Deere SERVICE ADVISOR).
Turn the Ignition ON, but leave the Engine OFF.
Drain the sediment bowl on the bottom of the primary fuel filter until all water is expelled.
Operate the engine under normal use conditions.
Re-read the DTCs. If 000097.00 does not reoccur, the problem was likely standard moisture build-up over time. Monitor the sediment bowl regularly. If 000097.00 reoccurs immediately, the fault is likely electrical. Check the WIF sensor circuit for an open input circuit, an open ground circuit, or a short from the 5V input.
Repair steps
Drain the Separator
Locate the primary fuel filter/water separator. Open the drain valve at the bottom of the filter and drain the fluid into a clear, suitable container to inspect the fuel-to-water ratio.
Evaluate Contamination
If a massive amount of water is present in the drained fluid, remove and completely replace the fuel filters.
Inspect the Fuel Tank
If heavy water contamination is found in the filters, inspect the main fuel tank. You may need to drain the tank, flush it, and refill it with clean, uncontaminated diesel.
Inspect the Sensor and Wiring
If the fuel is clean but the code persists, disconnect the Water in Fuel (WIF) sensor. Inspect the wiring harness and connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or broken wires (open ground/input).
Replace the Sensor
If the wiring is intact and the filter bowl is free of water, the WIF sensor itself has failed internally and must be replaced.
