John Deere 974.04 – ACU, EPC, UIC, or ECU / ECM: Hand Throttle Potentiometer, Voltage Too Low

The control unit measures a voltage below a specific threshold (typically below 0.3 volts or 0.5 volts) at the signal input of the hand throttle potentiometer. This low voltage condition indicates a short to ground, a broken signal lead, or a failure of the potentiometer's 5-volt supply voltage.

   Visually inspect the wiring and connections at the hand throttle potentiometer (B96 or B78) for physical damage, loose pins, or corrosion.

   Measure the voltage at the signal lead (e.g., lead 6018 or 6077) with a multimeter to confirm if it is reading below the 0.3V–0.5V threshold.

   Inspect the circuit for any signs of shorting to ground.

   Verify that the 5-volt reference supply voltage to the potentiometer is within the correct range. If missing, check the power source or control unit.

   Test the hand throttle potentiometer's resistance sweep for dead spots or internal shorts using a diagnostic tool or multimeter.

   Preparation

   Turn off the engine, place the tractor in park, and turn the key to the OFF position.

   Access the Sensor

   Locate the hand throttle potentiometer, which is typically housed inside the right-hand console or the CommandARM/armrest.

   Harness Repair

   Disconnect the wiring harness from the potentiometer. If corrosion or a loose connection is found, clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and reseat the connector. If a short to ground was found in the wiring during diagnostics, splice and repair the damaged section of the harness.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the wiring and supply voltage are intact but the signal voltage remains too low, the potentiometer has failed internally. Unbolt the defective hand throttle potentiometer and install the replacement part.

   Reassembly and Testing

   Reconnect the wiring harness. Turn the key to the ON position, clear the active fault codes via the CommandCenter or diagnostic tool, and sweep the hand throttle to ensure the code does not return and engine RPM responds correctly.
