John Deere 98.12 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine Oil Level Sensor Issue
Issue description
This code indicates that the engine oil level sensor is not functioning correctly. The underlying condition is typically a failure of the sensor itself, a wiring/circuit issue, or a data transfer problem between the sensor and the control module.

Check the cause
Pull the engine oil dipstick to manually verify the oil level and rule out a genuine low-oil condition triggering erratic readings.
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Engine ECU and the oil level sensor for loose connections, chafed wires, or corrosion.
Check the resistance of the sensor using a multimeter, or use a PC-based diagnostic tool (like John Deere Service ADVISOR) to monitor the 'Engine Oil Level' signal for correctness.
Repair steps
Locate the Sensor
The engine oil level sensor is typically located directly on the engine oil dipstick tube, on the air intake side of the engine.
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and allow the engine to cool.
Disconnect the Harness
Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the oil level sensor.
Remove the Sensor
Unthread or unbolt the faulty sensor from the dipstick tube/block assembly.
Install the New Sensor
Insert the new measuring probe fully into the receptacle (the probe must sit fully in the oil to read correctly) and secure it.
Reconnect the Harness
Plug the electrical connector back into the new sensor.
Clear Codes and Verify
Turn the key to the ON position (without starting the engine). The ECU algorithm monitors the oil level while keyed on with zero engine speed. Clear the 000098.12 fault code with your diagnostic tool and verify that it does not return.
