CAB1497

John Deere CAB1497 – Left Control Unit (E03): Unloading Auger Engage Warning

Issue description

The system has detected a warning related to the unloading auger engage function. Specifically, the Unloading Auger Engage driver has detected an open, short, over voltage, or over temperature condition. This indicates that the electronic signal from the control unit to the engagement mechanism is compromised. As a safety measure, the control unit will prevent the unloading auger from engaging until the fault is resolved.

Check the cause

  1. Verify operational requirements are met (operator seated, road transport switch in 'field' position, multifunction handle not in neutral)

  2. Check the combine's diagnostic display for any other active fault codes that could be related

  3. Check system voltage at the battery and alternator to ensure they are within correct specifications, as an over-voltage condition can trigger this fault

  4. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the unloading auger engagement mechanism and sensors (especially near the auger's pivot point) for damage, corrosion, or loose connections

  5. Monitor voltage readings for the unloading auger sensors in the diagnostic menu for erratic or out-of-range values (e.g., spiking above 4.5V)

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the faulty component

Based on the diagnostic checks, identify the likely cause. The fault's description points to an electrical issue (open, short, over voltage, or over temperature) in the auger engage driver circuit, which involves the Left Control Unit, wiring, and potentially a sensor or solenoid on the unloading auger system.

  2. Test unloading auger position sensor

Test the sensor for correct voltage output and continuity. The ability to engage the auger depends on its swung-out position. If readings are erratic or incorrect, replace the sensor.

  3. Inspect engagement solenoid

Locate the solenoid on the hydraulic valve block. Have an assistant operate the switch and check if the solenoid magnetizes (a screwdriver held near it should be pulled in). If it receives power but does not actuate, or receives no power, perform further electrical testing on the solenoid and its wiring.

  4. Address wiring issues

Repair or replace any damaged sections of the wiring harness identified during inspection. Pay close attention to areas exposed to heat or chafing.

  5. Replace faulty components

Replace any sensors or solenoids determined to be faulty with new OEM parts.

  6. Perform calibration

Perform the Unloading Auger Swing Time Calibration through the diagnostic addresses on the cornerpost display (e.g., E03 100 and E03 101) to help the control unit relearn the swing time. Perform the Unloading Auger Engage Calibration if applicable to your model.

  7. Clear codes and test

Clear the fault codes from the control unit's memory and test the unloading auger's operation. If the code persists, the Left Control Unit itself may require replacement.
