E:016

Kubota E:016 – Meter Panel: Charging System Error

Issue description

The machine's electrical system is not receiving the proper charging voltage from the alternator while the engine is running.

Applies to these machines

  • KX015-4
  • KX016-4
  • KX018-4
  • KX040-4
  • KX057-4
  • KX080-4
  • U15-3
  • U17-3
  • U27-4
  • U50-5S

Check the cause

  1. Perform a Meter Panel Key-On Test: Turn the key switch to the 'ON' position without starting the engine. If the charging lamp is lit, the circuit is functioning normally in its resting state, or there may be a short if it stays lit while running. If the charging lamp is off, there is likely a break in the wiring harness.

  2. Inspect the engine fan belt (V-belt) to see if it is loose, slipping, or has fallen off entirely.

  3. Inspect the 10A charging system fuse in the fuse box to see if it has blown.

  4. Start the engine and measure the voltage at the battery terminals using a multimeter. It should read between 13.5V and 14.5V. If it remains at battery resting voltage (~12.6V or lower), the alternator is not charging.

  5. Test the battery to ensure it does not have a dead cell that is preventing it from accepting a charge.

  6. Check the wiring harness connections at the alternator (B+ terminal and regulator plug) and the battery grounds for corrosion, breaks, or loose connections.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Address the Belt

If the fan belt is loose, loosen the alternator mounting and pivot bolts, apply proper tension to the belt using a pry bar, and retighten the bolts. If the belt is cracked or broken, replace it.

  3. Replace Fuses

If the 10A charging fuse is blown, replace it. If it blows again immediately upon startup, trace the wiring harness for a short to ground.

  4. Repair Wiring

Clean any corroded battery terminals or alternator connections. Repair any broken wires in the charging harness.

  5. Replace the Alternator

If the wiring, fuse, and belt are good but the alternator fails to output proper voltage, the alternator has failed internally. Disconnect the electrical connectors, remove the belt tension, unbolt the alternator, and install the new unit. Tension the belt to factory specifications.

  6. Clear Codes

Use the meter panel's tester/dealer mode to read and clear the failure history after the repair is verified.
