Kubota E-4 – Transmission ECU / Main Tractor ECU: Shuttle sensor (main) trouble
Issue description
The E-4 code triggers when the main sensor's voltage signal is missing, out of range, or shorted, preventing the tractor from recognizing the operator's directional command.
Applies to these machines
19 machines- M4
- M4-071
- M5

Check the cause
Disconnect the shuttle sensor harness and use a multimeter to verify that the ECU is supplying a 5-volt reference to the sensor.
Check the sensor connector and wiring harness for corrosion, broken wires, or shorts.
Run TST-1 Mode (Live Data) through the tractor's dash panel to observe live sensor voltages. Normal voltages are Neutral: ~2.20V and ~2.74V, Forward: ~0.62V and ~4.30V, Reverse: ~3.81V and ~1.13V. If the main voltage is stuck at 0V or 5V regardless of lever position, the sensor has failed internally.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and engage the parking brake.
Access the Sensor
Remove the plastic steering column covers or console panels to access the base of the shuttle shift lever linkage.
Remove the Faulty Sensor
Disconnect the electrical connector from the shuttle potentiometer. Unbolt the sensor from the shuttle linkage assembly.
Install the New Sensor
Mount the replacement OEM potentiometer to the linkage. Reconnect the wiring harness.
Clear the Error Codes
Hold down both the DPF INHIBIT switch and the Parked Regeneration switch, then turn the key switch to the “ON” position. The LCD will enter Mode Selection. Press the parked regen switch until "B" is displayed. Hold the parked regen switch for more than 2 seconds to enter Error Clear mode (the screen will display "PUSH"). Hold the switch again for 2 seconds until "OFF" is displayed. Turn the key off. (Alternatively, a dealer can clear this using Kubota Diagmaster software).
Test Operation
Turn the tractor on and verify that the F/N/R dash indicators match the lever position and that the tractor engages gears properly.
