E-84

Kubota E-84 – Engine ECU or Main ECU: Acceleration sensor maladjusted

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the voltage or resistance output from the throttle/acceleration sensor is outside of its calibrated or expected range, causing the machine to enter a limp mode where the engine will not rev above idle or is capped around 2000 RPM.

Applies to these machines

  • L3301
  • L3901
  • L3302
  • L4701
  • L3560
  • L4060
  • MX4800
  • MX5400
  • LX2610
  • LX3310
  • F3710
  • KX033
  • KX057
  • KX080
  • KX121
  • U35
  • U48
  • U55

Check the cause

  1. Check the physical mounting of the acceleration sensor on the throttle linkage to ensure screws have not vibrated loose, causing physical maladjustment.

  2. Use a multimeter to check the sensor's resistance (Ohms) across its sweep for dead spots or erratic jumps, comparing against Workshop Manual specifications.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connector plug leading to the sensor for chafed wires, moisture, or corrosion that could mimic a failed sensor.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Locate the throttle acceleration sensor, typically mounted near the throttle linkage or pedal assembly depending on the specific model.

  3. Remove the Old Sensor

Depress the locking tab on the electrical connector and unplug it. Remove the mounting screws holding the sensor in place and remove the unit.

  4. Install the New Sensor

Mount the new OEM acceleration sensor in the same orientation. Snug the mounting screws but do not overtighten, as the plastic housing can crack.

  5. Reconnect Wiring

Plug the electrical connector back into the sensor until it clicks. Reconnect the battery.

  6. ECM Reset and Calibration

Reset the ECM and calibrate the new sensor. Most modern Kubota emissions-tier engines require the dealer to hook up the Kubota Diagmaster software tool to clear the E-84 code and properly calibrate the new sensor's sweep into the ECU.
