E:9116

Kubota E:9116 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine overheat warning

Issue description

Triggered when the engine coolant temperature exceeds the safe operating threshold, prompting the system to warn the operator to prevent catastrophic engine damage.

Check the cause

  1. Check the coolant temperature gauge to verify if it is actually reading hot or if it is behaving erratically (which points to a faulty sensor)

  2. Inspect the radiator and hydraulic oil cooler for blockages, as skid steers operating in high-debris environments frequently suffer from clogged cooling fins

  3. Ensure the engine coolant is at the proper level in both the radiator and the overflow reservoir

  4. Check hydraulic temperatures, as high-flow attachments can cause the hydraulic fluid to overheat, transferring excess heat to the engine cooling system

  5. Inspect the alternator/fan belt for proper tension and signs of wear or slipping

  6. Test the coolant temperature sensor and its wiring harness/pigtail for damage, corrosion, or inaccurate resistance readings

Repair steps

  1. Cool Down

Safely park the machine, turn off the engine, and allow it to cool completely before opening the engine compartment or radiator cap.

  2. Clean the Cooling Package

Use compressed air or low-pressure water to blow out all dust, dirt, and debris from the radiator and oil cooler fins.

  3. Adjust the Fan Belt

If the fan belt is loose, adjust the tensioner to factory specifications.

  4. Replace the Coolant Temperature Sensor

If faulty: Locate the coolant temperature sensor on the engine water flange/block. Disconnect the electrical pigtail. Unthread the old sensor and install the new OEM sensor. Reconnect the wiring harness.

  5. Replace the Thermostat and Water Pump

If genuine overheating persists: Drain the engine coolant into a clean pan. Remove the thermostat housing and replace the thermostat and gasket. If the water pump is weeping or failing to circulate coolant, remove the fan and belt, unbolt the water pump, and install a new pump and gasket.

  6. Refill and Bleed

Refill the system with the correct Kubota-approved coolant, bleed any air from the system, and run the machine under load to verify that the E:9116 code clears and the temperature remains stable.
