Kubota E:9213 – Engine ECU: DPF regeneration Error (Water temperature is low)
Issue description
For a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) regeneration cycle to initiate and sustain itself, the engine coolant temperature must reach a minimum threshold (above 65°C / 149°F). If the engine fails to reach or maintain this temperature, the system aborts the regeneration process to protect the engine and emissions system, logging the E:9213 error. This is typically caused by a thermostat that is stuck open, low coolant levels, or a faulty coolant temperature sensor.

Check the cause
Check Coolant Levels: Ensure the radiator and overflow tank have adequate coolant. Low coolant can prevent the sensor from reading accurately and disrupt engine heating.
Verify Actual Coolant Temperature: Use a diagnostic scan tool or an infrared thermometer at the thermostat housing to see if the engine is actually reaching 65°C (149°F).
Inspect the Thermostat: If the engine takes an unusually long time to warm up or never reaches operating temperature, the thermostat is likely stuck open and flowing water continuously to the radiator.
Test the Coolant Temperature Sensor: Inspect the wiring harness and connector for the water temperature sensor (thermo sensor) for corrosion or breaks.
Review Operating Habits: Ensure the machine is not being idled excessively. Kubota manuals note that low engine RPMs result in lower exhaust temperatures, making it difficult to burn particulate matter. The engine must be above 1200 RPM for regeneration to occur.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the machine on a level surface, lower the loader arms, turn off the engine, and allow the machine to cool completely to avoid severe burns from hot coolant or DPF exhaust components.
Drain Coolant
Disconnect the negative battery cable. Place a clean drain pan under the radiator/engine block and drain the engine coolant.
Replace the Thermostat (If faulty)
Locate the thermostat housing at the end of the upper radiator hose. Remove the housing bolts and pull out the old thermostat. Clean the mating surfaces. Install the new thermostat (the standard opening temperature is approx. 82°C / 179.6°F) and a new gasket. Reinstall the housing and tighten the bolts to OEM torque specs.
Replace the Coolant Temperature Sensor (If faulty)
Locate the thermo sensor on the engine water flange. Disconnect the electrical pigtail, unscrew the old sensor, and install the new one. Reconnect the harness.
Refill and Bleed
Refill the cooling system with the appropriate heavy-duty diesel coolant.
Test and Regenerate
Reconnect the battery. Start the engine and run it under load to bring the coolant temperature above 65°C (149°F) and engine speed above 1200 RPM. Check for leaks.
Clear Codes
Once conditions are met, allow the auto-regeneration to run or force a regeneration using a diagnostic tool. Clear the E:9213 code from the ECU.
