Kubota P0016 – Engine ECU (Engine Control Module): NE-G phase shift

Issue description

The engine's computer has detected a large phase shift (misalignment) between the NE pulse (Crankshaft Position Sensor) and the G pulse (Camshaft Position Sensor). This occurs when timing signals fall out of synchronization, resulting in an invalid G signal, which typically causes the engine to hesitate during start-up, start slowly, or suffer from insufficient output.

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the battery voltage and the sensor supply voltage (VCC) are normal

  2. Use Kubota Diagmaster software or an oscilloscope to verify the NE signal and G signal outputs

  3. Inspect the pulsar hole on the flywheel to ensure it is not misaligned and has no foreign matter (dirt, metal shavings) adhering to it

  4. Inspect the crank gear to ensure it has not slipped out of position

  5. Inspect the crankshaft to ensure the side clearance is within proper service specifications

  6. Inspect the area around the camshaft position pulsar gear for damage or debris

Repair steps

  1. Connect a computer with Kubota Diagmaster software to the Engine ECU to confirm the P0016 / 636-7 code and check live engine conditions.

    Confirm the fault code and observe live data.

  2. Inspect the wiring harnesses and connectors leading to both the Crankshaft Position Sensor and the Camshaft Position Sensor. Repair any frayed wires or corroded pins.

    Check for electrical integrity in the sensor circuits.

  3. Remove the sensors and clean any foreign matter from the flywheel pulsar hole and the camshaft pulsar gear. Reinstall and test.

    Ensure no debris is interfering with the sensor readings.

  4. If the code persists, check the mechanical timing. If the crank gear or flywheel is misaligned, realign or replace the damaged mechanical timing components.

    Address potential mechanical misalignment causing the phase shift.

  5. If mechanical timing is perfectly aligned and wiring is intact, replace the faulty Crankshaft Position Sensor and/or Camshaft Position Sensor.

    Replace sensors if all other mechanical and electrical checks pass.

  6. Clear the fault codes using the Diagmaster tool. Cycle the key switch to 'OFF', then start the engine to confirm the repair.

    The diagnostic counter will reset to 0 when the error is successfully resolved.
