Kubota P0087 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low

Issue description

The actual fuel pressure inside the common rail drops below the minimum threshold commanded by the engine computer. This starves the engine of fuel and forces the machine into a limp mode (power derate) to protect the engine, limiting RPMs to around 1800 RPM and reducing output by up to 50-75%.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the fuel water separator bowl for debris, water, or gelled diesel fuel (common in cold weather)

  2. Check all fuel lines from the tank to the engine for kinks, crushing, or blockages

  3. Verify lift pump flow by disconnecting the line after the low-pressure lift pump to ensure adequate fuel volume is reaching the high-pressure injection pump

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the fuel rail pressure sensor for corrosion, shorts, or a loose connection

  5. Check for air intrusion being sucked into the fuel lines, causing a pressure drop at the rail

Repair steps

  1. Clean the Water Separator

    Shut off the fuel valve. Unscrew the fuel water separator bowl, drain it, and clean the internal screen/filter. Reinstall the bowl tightly.

  2. Replace the Spin-On Fuel Filter

    Remove the primary fuel filter and replace it with a new OEM filter. A clogged filter is the #1 cause of this code on Kubota L-series tractors.

  3. Bleed the Fuel System

    Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position (without cranking the engine) and leave it for a few moments to allow the electric lift pump to prime the system and purge any trapped air.

  4. Clear the Code

    Disconnect the negative battery cable for a few minutes to reset the ECM, or use an OBD2/Kubota diagnostic scan tool to clear the P0087 code.

  5. Test Run

    Start the tractor and throttle up. If the tractor revs normally past 1800 RPM without hesitation, the issue is resolved.

  6. Advanced Component Replacement

    If filters do not fix the issue, you will need to test and potentially replace the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor, the Suction Control Valve (SCV) on the injection pump, or the High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) itself.
