Kubota P0090 – Engine ECU: Open circuit of harness or coil in PCV line

Issue description

The Engine ECU cannot detect electrical continuity through the Pump Control Valve (PCV) / Suction Control Valve (SCV) control circuit due to a broken wire, disconnected plug, or internal coil failure. This causes the engine to enter a derated failsafe mode, disable EGR functions, and may force an engine stop or no-start condition.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the electrical connector at the PCV/SCV on the high-pressure fuel pump for secure connection, corrosion, moisture, or bent pins.

  2. Disconnect the PCV connector and measure resistance across the two pins of the PCV coil; an open circuit (infinite resistance / OL) indicates internal failure.

  3. If the PCV coil tests good, check the wiring harness for continuity between the PCV connector and the Engine ECU, looking for chafed, broken, or disconnected wires.

  4. Verify normal battery voltage, as low voltage can trigger erratic ECU faults.

Repair steps

  1. Replace harness

    If the harness is found to be open, replace the affected harness section (Kubota does not approve wire harness repairs).

  2. Prepare machine

    If the PCV (SCV) itself is faulty, turn off the key switch, disconnect the negative battery cable, and allow the engine to cool. Hang a 'DO NOT OPERATE' tag on the machine.

  3. Clean area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the high-pressure fuel pump to prevent dirt from entering the fuel system.

  4. Remove PCV

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the PCV. Remove the two mounting bolts holding the PCV to the pump body. Carefully pull the valve out of the pump housing.

  5. Install new PCV

    Lubricate the new O-rings on the replacement PCV with clean diesel fuel. Insert the new valve into the pump housing, ensuring the O-rings seat properly and are not pinched.

  6. Secure and reconnect

    Install and tighten the two mounting bolts to the specified torque. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Prime and test

    Reconnect the battery, prime the fuel system to remove any air, and start the engine. Clear the P0090 fault code using a diagnostic tool (like Kubota Diagmaster) and verify that the engine operates at full power without the code returning.
