Kubota P0121 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch 'A' Circuit Range/Performance Problem
Issue description
The engine control module has detected that the voltage or percentage reading from Sensor 1 has dropped below the expected correlation range compared to Sensor 2. This mismatch triggers the code and often forces the machine into a reduced-power 'limp mode' to prevent unintended acceleration.

Check the cause
Scan Tool Live Data: Connect an OBD-II / Kubota diagnostic scan tool. Turn the key ON (engine off). Monitor the live data for TPS1 and TPS2 voltage/percentage. Slowly press the accelerator pedal from idle to wide-open throttle. The signals should change smoothly and monotonically. Look for sudden dropouts, spikes, or dead zones in the Sensor 1 reading.
Wiring and Connector Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the throttle body and the accelerator pedal. Look for corroded pins, moisture intrusion, or broken conductors. A high-resistance connection can easily skew the 5-volt reference signal and trigger a range/performance code.
Wiggle Test: While monitoring the live TPS data on your scan tool, gently wiggle the wiring harness near the sensors and the ECM. If the voltage spikes or drops, you have a wiring short or open circuit.
Mechanical Inspection: Inspect the throttle body for heavy carbon buildup or mechanical binding that could cause the throttle plate to stick and report an inaccurate position.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before servicing electronic engine controls to prevent short circuits.
Clean the Throttle Body
If mechanical binding was found, use a throttle body cleaner and a soft brush to remove carbon deposits from the throttle blade and bore.
Access the Sensor
Depending on your diagnostic results, locate either the Throttle Position Sensor (mounted on the side of the throttle body on the engine) or the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (integrated into the floor pedal assembly).
Remove the Faulty Component
Disconnect the electrical pigtail. Remove the mounting bolts securing the sensor or the entire pedal assembly. (Note: On many modern Kubota machines, the pedal sensor is serviced as a complete pedal assembly).
Install the New Part
Mount the new sensor or pedal assembly. Tighten the mounting bolts to the OEM torque specifications.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring the weather-pack seal clicks firmly into place. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
Clear Codes and Test
Use your diagnostic scan tool to clear the P0121 code from the ECM. Start the machine and verify smooth idle. Perform a test drive to ensure throttle response is restored and the code does not return.
