Kubota P0154 – Engine Control Module (ECM): EGO2 Open/Lazy (HO2S2)

Issue description

The downstream (post-catalyst) Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S2) is non-responsive or persistently cold for longer than 120 seconds while the engine is running, typically caused by an open circuit, a short to ground, an open sensor ground, or an inoperative sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the downstream O2 sensor for melted wires, corrosion, or physical damage

  2. Verify that there is a 12V feed to the O2 sensor heater circuit and that the heater ground circuit is intact (not open)

  3. Check the O2 signal wire for continuity between the sensor connector and the ECM, ensuring the signal wire is not shorted to ground

  4. Verify the integrity of the 5V sensor ground (5Vrtn1)

Repair steps

  1. Safely Access the Sensor

    Turn off the engine and allow the exhaust system to cool completely to avoid burns. Locate the downstream oxygen sensor (HO2S2), which is positioned in the exhaust pipe after the catalytic converter.

  2. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If your diagnostic checks revealed an open wire, a short to ground, or a damaged connector pin, repair the wiring harness or replace the connector pigtail. Clear the code and test-run the engine to see if the sensor responds.

  3. Replace the Sensor

    If the wiring, heater feed, and grounds test perfectly, the sensor itself is internally open or inoperative. Disconnect the electrical connector. Use an O2 sensor socket (typically 7/8" or 22mm) to unthread the old sensor from the exhaust pipe. Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (if it does not come pre-applied), ensuring no anti-seize gets on the sensor tip. Thread the new sensor in by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque. Reconnect the electrical connector and ensure the wiring is routed away from extreme heat sources.

  4. Clear Codes and Verify

    Use a diagnostic scan tool (such as the Kubota Gasoline Service Tool / KGST) to clear the P0154 code. Run the engine for more than 120 seconds to verify the ECM is receiving a fluctuating voltage signal from the new HO2S2 sensor and that the code does not return.
