Kubota P0217 – Engine ECU (Engine Control Unit): ECT Higher Than Expected 2 or Engine Coolant Over Temperature Condition
Issue description
The engine coolant temperature has exceeded the safe operating limit (reaches 120°C/248°F or more for at least 5 seconds). The engine will typically enter a protection mode (limp mode), resulting in insufficient output, EGR stop, and an illuminated warning light to prevent severe internal engine damage.

Check the cause
Safety First: If the machine is actively overheating, shut the engine down immediately and allow it to cool completely before opening the radiator cap or inspecting components.
Visual Inspection & Fluid Levels: Check the coolant level in the radiator and the overflow reservoir. Inspect the radiator hoses, water pump weep hole, and thermostat housing for visible coolant leaks.
Airflow & Radiator Blockage: Inspect the radiator and condenser fins for mud, dust, or debris that could be restricting airflow.
Fan Operation: Check the condition and tension of the engine cooling fan belt. If equipped with a fan clutch or electric fan, verify that it is engaging properly when the engine reaches operating temperature.
Scan Tool Data: Connect a diagnostic scanner to read live ECT data. Verify that the temperature rises steadily and matches the physical engine temperature. If the sensor reads erratically, the sensor itself may be at fault.
Thermostat Check: Feel the upper radiator hose once the engine is warmed up. If the engine is overheating but the hose remains cold, the thermostat is likely stuck closed.
Repair steps
Drain the engine coolant into a clean pan.
If replacing a stuck Thermostat.
Locate the thermostat housing (following the upper radiator hose to the engine block).
Remove the housing bolts and pull out the old thermostat.
Clean the mating surfaces thoroughly.
Install the new thermostat and a new gasket.
Ensure the jiggle valve/pin is oriented correctly per the manual.
Reinstall the housing and torque bolts to spec.
Refill the system with Kubota-approved coolant and bleed the air from the system.
Drain the cooling system.
If replacing a failed Water Pump.
Remove the cooling fan, fan shroud, and drive belt.
Unbolt the water pump assembly from the engine block.
Clean the engine block mating surface of all old gasket material.
Install the new water pump with a new gasket.
Reassemble the belt, fan, and shroud, then refill and bleed the cooling system.
Clear the P0217 fault code using a diagnostic scan tool.
Post-Repair: Run the machine under load while monitoring the live ECT data to ensure the temperature stabilizes within the normal operating range.
