Kubota P0223 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: TPS2 Signal Voltage High

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an abnormally high voltage signal from Throttle Position Sensor 2 (TPS2), which is located on the electronic throttle body. The fault triggers when the TPS2 sensor voltage is higher than 4.80 Volts for longer than 0.5 seconds while the key is ON or the engine is running.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the throttle position sensor wiring and connections at the electronic throttle body for damaged harnesses, bent pins, or corrosion

  2. Verify that all system ground connections (specifically the TPS RETURN circuit) are secure and free of corrosion, as an open sensor ground is a primary cause

  3. Check the 5.0V reference feed (TPS POWER) with a multimeter to ensure it reads approximately 5.0V and is not shorted to battery voltage

  4. Test the TPS2 signal circuit to ensure it is not shorted to a voltage source

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the equipment and disconnect the battery

    Prevents electrical shorts during testing.

  2. Locate the Electronic Throttle Body and disconnect the TPS connector

    Located on the intake manifold. Often a 6-pin connector for the throttle body or a 3-pin 6098-0142 connector for standalone sensors.

  3. Repair Wiring/Grounds

    If your diagnostic checks revealed an open ground, a short to voltage on the 5V reference wire, or a short on the signal wire, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or replace the connector plug.

  4. Replace the Sensor/Throttle Body

    If the wiring, reference voltage, and grounds all test normal, the Throttle Position Sensor itself has failed internally. On many modern Kubota WG-series engines, the TPS is integrated into the electronic throttle body, requiring the replacement of the entire throttle body assembly.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the harness, reconnect the battery, and use an OBD-II or Kubota diagnostic scan tool to clear the P0223 / DTC 223 code.

  6. Test Run

    Turn the key ON (engine off) to verify the code does not immediately return, then start the engine to ensure normal idle and throttle response.
