P0268

Kubota P0268 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Injector Driver #3 Short-To-Power

Issue description

The system has detected an electrical fault on the #3 cylinder's fuel injector circuit. Specifically, the code sets when the injector driver circuit is shorted to a voltage source between the injector and the ECM, the injector coil is shorted internally, or there is a loss of the 12.0V feed to the injector. It can also be triggered if the battery voltage drops below 16.0V while the engine is running and the injector's on-state low-side voltage is out of specification.

Applies to these machines

  • WG1605-G-E3
  • WG1605-L-E3
  • WG1605-GL-E3
  • WG1605-N-E3
  • WG1605-LN-E3
  • WG1605-GLN-E3
  • WG972
  • WG2503
  • WG3800
  • Toro mowers
  • PowerBoss sweepers
  • Genie S-80
  • Genie S-85

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors for fuel injector #3 for damage, bad contact, aging, looseness, or exposed wires that could be shorting to a power source

  2. Verify the battery voltage is within the normal operating range, as voltage irregularities can trigger the code

  3. Disconnect the fuel injector #3 wiring harness connector and check for a short to voltage in the injector driver circuit between the injector plug and the ECM pins

  4. Test the #3 injector coil resistance to see if it is shorted internally, and verify that the injector is receiving its proper 12.0V feed

  5. Use the Kubota GCP Diagnostic Display Tool or EDIS software to monitor the fault codes and live data

Repair steps

  1. Prepare machine for service

Park the machine on firm, level ground. Stop the engine, remove the key, and allow the engine to cool completely.

  2. Disconnect battery

    Disconnect the battery negative cable.

  3. Replace engine wiring harness

If a short to power is found in the harness, the wiring must be addressed by replacing the affected engine wiring harness (Kubota does not approve wiring harness repairs).

  4. Replace fuel injector #3

If the wiring tests good but the #3 injector coil is shorted internally, remove the fuel rail/delivery pipe and replace fuel injector #3.

  5. Replace ECM

If both the wiring harness and the fuel injector test perfectly fine, the ECM's internal injector driver is likely faulty. Replace the ECM.

  6. Verify repair

Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and use the diagnostic software to clear the fault codes and verify the repair.
