Kubota P0271 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM): Cylinder 4 Injector Circuit High / Injector Driver #4 Short-To-Power
Issue description
Triggered when the engine's control module detects that the reference voltage or current draw from the fuel injector on cylinder #4 is abnormally high, exceeding the manufacturer's maximum threshold. This usually indicates an internal short within the injector's solenoid coil or a short-to-battery-voltage in the wiring harness.

Check the cause
Scan and Verify: Connect a diagnostic scan tool (such as Kubota Diagmaster or an OBD-II scanner) to confirm P0271 is the only active code. Check freeze-frame data to see the conditions under which the code was set.
Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness, connectors, and pins at the cylinder 4 injector and the ECM. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or corroded/bent pins that could cause a short to power.
Voltage Test: With the ignition key ON (engine off), disconnect the cylinder 4 injector and measure the voltage at the power feed pin of the harness. It should read standard battery voltage (approx. 11V - 14.5V).
Resistance Test (Ohmmeter): Measure the resistance across the two terminal blades of the cylinder 4 fuel injector itself. Compare the reading to the OEM specification (typically between 0.5 and 2.0 ohms for low-impedance injectors, or up to 15 ohms for high-impedance). A reading of zero or significantly below spec confirms an internal short in the injector.
ECM Driver Test: Backprobe the ground/control wire at the injector connector while cranking the engine. The voltage should pulse toward ground (near 0V). If it remains at battery voltage constantly, the wiring is shorted to power or the ECM driver is faulty.
Repair steps
Prep the Machine
Park the equipment on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Injector
Remove any engine covers or intake components blocking access to the cylinder 4 fuel injector (cylinder 4 is typically at the rear of the engine block, furthest from the cooling fan).
Disconnect Lines and Wiring
Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the injector. For diesel common rail engines, use a flare nut wrench to loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connected to the injector. Cap the fuel rail and line to prevent contamination.
Remove the Injector
Remove the hold-down clamp or retaining bolt securing the injector. Carefully pull the injector out of the cylinder head.
Clean and Prep
Clean the injector bore in the cylinder head, ensuring no debris falls into the cylinder. Ensure the old copper crush washer is removed from the bore.
Install the New Injector
Lubricate the new O-rings on the replacement injector with clean engine oil. Insert the new injector (with a new copper crush washer) into the bore and torque the hold-down clamp to OEM specifications.
Reassembly
Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line (torque to spec) and plug in the electrical connector.
Finalize
Reconnect the battery. Bleed the fuel system if required by your specific engine model. Use the scan tool to clear the P0271 fault code, start the engine, and check for fuel leaks and proper idle. (Note: Some Kubota Common Rail engines require the new injector's QR code/calibration code to be programmed into the ECM using Diagmaster).
