Kubota P0562 – Engine Control Module (ECM / Engine ECU): Battery Voltage (VBAT) Low

Issue description

Triggered when the control module detects that the system voltage has dropped below the minimum acceptable operating threshold (8 Volts or less for 1 second or more, not monitored during engine cranking). The system may automatically limit engine output to approximately 75% of normal conditions to protect the electrical system.

Check the cause

  1. Check resting battery voltage with a digital multimeter (should read 12.4V - 12.6V with engine off)

  2. Check running battery voltage to verify the alternator is supplying between 13.5V and 15.0V

  3. Inspect battery terminals and cables for loose connections, high resistance, or heavy corrosion

  4. Inspect the alternator and fan drive belt for proper tension, wear, or slipping

  5. Test the alternator and voltage regulator output (stator should read around 15V AC at idle if using an external regulator)

  6. Inspect the wiring harness between the battery, alternator, and the ECU (specifically the ECU V12 or B-54 terminal) for open circuits, short circuits to ground, or physical damage

Repair steps

  1. Clean and Tighten Connections

    Disconnect the battery cables (negative first). Clean the battery posts and cable terminals thoroughly with a wire brush. Reconnect and tighten them securely. Apply dielectric grease to prevent future corrosion.

  2. Charge or Replace the Battery

    If the battery voltage is severely depleted (e.g., below 9V), place it on a slow charger (10 amps or less) for 24 hours. Let it rest and re-test. If it fails to hold a 12.4V+ charge or fails a load test, replace the battery.

  3. Replace the Alternator or Regulator

    If the battery is healthy but the system is not charging while running (staying below 13.5V), replace the faulty alternator or external voltage regulator.

  4. Repair Wiring

    If the battery and alternator test fine, trace the wiring harness to the ECM. Repair or replace any pinched, corroded, or broken wires causing the voltage drop.

  5. Clear the Code

    Turn the key switch OFF to recover from the error state, then use an OBD-II or Kubota diagnostic scanner to clear the P0562 / SPN 168 FMI 4 code from the ECM.
