Kubota P081A – Engine ECU (Engine Control Unit): Ground Short Circuit of Starter Relay Drive Circuit
Issue description
The control circuit that provides the ground or power signal to activate the starter relay has shorted to ground. When this code is active, engine regeneration is inhibited, and the machine will likely experience a "faulty starting" condition (e.g., the engine will not crank or start).

Check the cause
Connect a computer to the Engine ECU using Kubota's Diagmaster diagnosis software. Try to reproduce the problem based on the DTC information and check the related signals on the Data Monitor screen.
Ensure the key switch is turned to the "OFF" position before disconnecting components.
Disconnect the main connector from the Engine ECU.
Disconnect the starter relay from its harness connector.
Check the conduction of the wire harness specifically between starter relay terminal 3 and ECU terminal 68. Test for continuity and verify that the wire is not shorting out against the machine's chassis (ground).
Diagnose whether the wire harness (including the plastic connectors and pins) is physically damaged, melted, or corroded.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent electrical arcing or further ECU damage.
Access Components
Locate the Engine ECU and the starter relay block.
Repair the Harness
If the diagnostic continuity test revealed a short to ground between ECU terminal 68 and starter relay terminal 3, trace the wiring harness to find the chafed or melted section. Splice and solder the damaged wire, and seal it with heat-shrink tubing, or replace the affected harness section entirely.
Replace the Relay
If the wiring harness tests perfectly fine with no shorts to ground, the internal coil of the starter relay itself has likely shorted. Remove the old starter relay and plug in a new OEM replacement.
Reassembly
Reconnect the starter relay, the ECU connector, and the battery.
Clear and Test
Connect the Diagmaster software, clear the P081A fault code, and attempt to crank the engine to verify the repair.
