Kubota P1156 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: Closed Loop Bank 1 Low (Gasoline)

Issue description

This fault code indicates that the engine control system is unable to maintain closed-loop fuel control on Bank 1. The system detects a persistent lean or rich condition that it cannot correct, or it detects that the Heated Exhaust Gas Oxygen (HEGO) sensor is non-responsive. Specifically, the code triggers when the Closed Loop Base Multiplier (CL_BM) exceeds 35% for a set number of updates.

Check the cause

  1. Check HEGO sensor and wiring for an open feed circuit to the O2 heater, an open heater ground circuit, an open or shorted-to-ground O2 signal wire, or an open sensor ground (5V return).

  2. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks upstream of or immediately near the HEGO sensor, which can introduce unmetered oxygen.

  3. Check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail/control actuator under all operating conditions.

  4. Check fuel injectors for an injector that is stuck open, stuck closed, or dirty.

  5. Check the ignition system for a weak spark or lack of spark to a cylinder (inspect spark plugs and ignition coils).

  6. Verify that the MAP sensor is not indicating a pressure lower than the true pressure and check vacuum hoses for kinks or leaks.

Repair steps

  1. Scan and Monitor

    Connect a diagnostic scan tool (such as the Kubota Gasoline Service Tool - KGST) to verify the P1156 code. Monitor live data for the O2 sensor voltage, MAP sensor readings, and fuel trims.

  2. Visual Inspection

    Inspect the exhaust manifold and piping near the O2 sensor for cracks, loose bolts, or blown gaskets. Repair any exhaust leaks found.

  3. Harness Testing

    Disconnect the HEGO sensor and use a multimeter to verify proper voltage, ground, and continuity back to the ECM. Repair any damaged wiring.

  4. Sensor Replacement

    If the wiring is intact but the HEGO sensor is non-responsive or stuck out of range during live data monitoring, replace the HEGO sensor.

  5. Fuel System Test

    Attach a mechanical fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail. If pressure is out of specification, replace the fuel filter or fuel pressure regulator.

  6. Injector Cleaning/Replacement

    If fuel pressure is normal but the engine is running rich/lean, perform an injector balance test. Clean or replace any injector that is stuck open or leaking.

  7. Clear and Verify

    Clear the fault codes using the diagnostic tool. Run the engine until it reaches operating temperature and verify that it successfully enters and remains in Closed Loop mode without the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) illuminating.
