P1163

Kubota P1163 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Adaptive Learn High (NG)

Issue description

The engine's closed-loop fuel control system has reached its maximum adaptive learning limit while running on Natural Gas (NG). The system is detecting a persistent lean or rich exhaust condition that it can no longer correct by adjusting the fuel trim.

Applies to these machines

  • WG1605
  • WG1903
  • WG2503
  • WG3800

Check the cause

  1. Check for other DTCs: If any other codes are present (especially MAP, TPS, or misfire codes), diagnose and repair those first.

  2. Inspect the HEGO Sensor & Wiring: Check the oxygen sensor wire for shorts to ground between the harness and the sensor signal. Ensure the sensor is not mispositioned and physically contacting the hot exhaust.

  3. Check for Vacuum & Exhaust Leaks: Inspect the intake manifold and crankcase for large vacuum leaks. Inspect the exhaust system for cracks or blown gaskets upstream of the HEGO sensor.

  4. Test Fuel Pressure: Verify that the gaseous fuel control actuator/regulator has proper fuel pressure under all operating conditions.

  5. Check Electrical Grounds: Inspect engine and ECM grounds for proper current flow. Faulty grounds can cause current supply issues resulting in false sensor readings.

  6. Ignition System Check: Verify that all cylinders are receiving a strong spark.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Leaks

Repair any vacuum, intake manifold, or exhaust leaks found during the diagnostic phase.

  2. Repair Wiring

Fix any damaged wiring harnesses or clean/tighten ground connections.

  3. Replace the HEGO Sensor

If the wiring is intact but the sensor is non-responsive or contaminated, replace the Pre-Catalyst HEGO sensor.

  4. Replace the Pressure Regulator

If fuel pressure testing shows erratic, excessively high, or low pressure that cannot be adjusted, replace the Direct Electronic Pressure Regulator (DEPR).

  5. Clean/Replace Injectors

If the fuel pressure and sensors are good, inspect the injectors. Clean or replace any that are stuck closed or dirty.

  6. Clear Codes

Use the Kubota Diagnostic tool (GCP) to clear the P1163 code, reset the adaptive learn tables, and run the engine in closed-loop mode to verify the repair.
