Kubota P1174 – Engine Control Module (ECM): EPR/CFV Voltage Supply High
Issue description
The supply voltage to the Electronic Pressure Regulator (EPR) or Continuous Flow Valve (CFV) exceeds 33.0 VDC for at least 5 seconds while the engine is running, which typically initiates a Power Derate 2 and turns on the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL).
Applies to these machines
7 machines- Kubota WG1605
- Kubota WG1605-G-E3
- Kubota WG1605-L-E3
- Kubota WG1605-GL-E3
- Kubota WG1903
- Kubota WG2503
- Kubota WG3800
Check the cause
Check System Voltage: Test the alternator output and battery voltage. An overcharging alternator can cause high voltage spikes across the system.
Inspect the Wiring Harness: Visually and physically inspect the wiring harness leading to the EPR/CFV. Look for damaged, chafed, or melted wires that could be causing a short to a higher voltage source.
Test the EPR Power Circuit: Use a multimeter to back-probe the EPR connector and verify the actual voltage reaching the valve.
Check ECM Grounds: Ensure the ECM grounds are clean, tight, and in their proper locations, as a bad ground can cause voltage irregularities.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the engine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to power or damaged wiring in the EPR circuit, repair or replace the affected section of the wiring harness.
Address Charging System
If the alternator was found to be overcharging (outputting > 33V on a 24V system, for example), replace the alternator or voltage regulator.
Replace the EPR Valve
If the wiring and charging system are functioning normally, the internal circuitry of the EPR valve itself has likely failed or shorted. Remove the fuel lines and electrical connector from the EPR, unbolt it from its mounting bracket, and install the new unit.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, clear the DTCs from the ECM using a diagnostic scan tool, and run the engine to verify that the code does not return and the engine operates without derating.
