Kubota P2301 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Spark Coil #1 Primary Short-to-Power
Issue description
The engine's control system has detected an abnormally high voltage condition on the primary control circuit for Ignition Coil #1. This indicates either a short-to-power in the wiring harness connecting to the coil, or an internal short within the primary winding of the spark coil itself.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- WG1605
- WG2503
- WG3800
Check the cause
Use a diagnostic scan tool to confirm P2301 is active and note freeze-frame data such as engine speed and battery voltage.
Inspect the wiring harness and connector for Ignition Coil #1 for chafed wires, melted insulation, corrosion, or pin intrusion.
Verify battery voltage is healthy (12-14V running) and check chassis and engine grounds for integrity.
Backprobe the coil connector to monitor voltage while cranking; control circuit voltage should not remain near battery voltage when the ECM driver attempts to pull it low.
Perform a coil swap test by swapping Ignition Coil #1 with Coil #2. If the code changes to P2304, the coil is internally shorted. If P2301 returns, the fault lies in the wiring harness or ECM.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Trace wiring
If the diagnostic points to a wiring issue: Trace the control wire from the Ignition Coil #1 connector back to the EControls ECM.
Repair wiring
Locate the short-to-power (where the wire is exposed and touching a voltage source) and repair the damaged section of the harness using proper automotive wiring repair techniques.
Locate coil
If the diagnostic points to a faulty ignition coil: Locate Ignition Coil #1 on the engine block/valve cover.
Disconnect harness
Depress the locking tab and disconnect the electrical harness connector from the coil.
Remove bolts
Remove the mounting bolt(s) securing the ignition coil.
Remove coil
Pull the old coil out of the spark plug well.
Install new coil
Insert the new OEM replacement coil and secure it with the mounting bolt(s).
Reconnect harness
Reconnect the electrical harness connector until it clicks into place.
Test engine
Reconnect the battery, clear the DTCs with your scan tool, and test-run the engine to ensure the misfire/code is resolved.
