Kubota P2306 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Spark Coil #3 Primary Open/Short-to-Ground
Issue description
This code indicates an electrical fault in the primary control circuit for the ignition coil on cylinder #3. The Engine Control Module (ECM) sets this code when it detects a short to ground in the wiring harness, an open circuit in the wiring harness, or an open circuit internal to the primary ignition coil itself. When this code is triggered, the system will typically turn on the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) / Engine Warning Light, disable closed-loop fuel control, and enforce a "Low Rev Limit" to protect the engine.
Applies to these machines
9 machines- Kubota WG1605
- Kubota WG1903
- Kubota WG2503
- Kubota WG3800
- Haulotte boom lifts
- Toro mowers
- Clark forklifts
- Heli forklifts
- PowerBoss sweepers
Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Inspect the ignition coil and spark plug cables for hardening, cracking, chaffing, separation, or split boot covers. Ensure the connector is properly seated and locked.
Harness Testing: Disconnect the ignition coil and the ECM. Use a multimeter to check the wiring harness for continuity (to rule out an open circuit) and check for continuity to ground (to rule out a short-to-ground).
Coil Testing: Measure the resistance of the primary winding on ignition coil #3 to check for an internal open circuit. You can also swap the coil with another cylinder (e.g., Cylinder #1 or #2) to see if the fault code follows the coil (e.g., changes to P2300 or P2303) or stays with the cylinder harness.
Voltage Check: Ensure battery voltage is stable. The code sets when battery voltage is between 10.0V and 16.0V during cranking or running.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Access the Coil
Locate ignition coil #3 on the engine cylinder head.
Remove the Defective Coil
Disconnect the electrical connector from the coil. Remove the mounting bolt(s) securing the coil and pull the coil straight up and off the spark plug.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a damaged harness (short to ground or broken wire), repair the affected section of the wiring harness or replace the harness assembly.
Install New Coil
If the coil was internally open, apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the boot of the new ignition coil. Push it firmly onto the spark plug and secure it with the mounting bolt.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back into the coil until it clicks. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
Clear Codes
Use an OBD2/diagnostic scanner to clear the P2306 fault code from the ECM.
Test Run
Start the engine and verify that it runs smoothly without the MIL illuminating or the engine entering a low-rev limp mode.
