Kubota P242C – Engine ECU: Exhaust gas temperature sensor 2 (T2) abnormality (Low side)
Issue description
The control module detects that the voltage signal from the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) outlet temperature sensor (T2) has dropped to 0.08 V or less for 5 seconds or more. This indicates a short to ground in the sensor itself, a short to ground in the wiring harness, or a complete internal failure of the sensor.

Check the cause
Verify the machine's overall battery voltage is normal, as low system voltage can cause erratic sensor readings.
Connect a diagnostic scan tool and view live data for the exhaust temperature sensors to confirm T2 voltage is stuck at or below 0.08 V or frozen at a default minimum value.
Turn the key switch OFF and visually inspect the T2 sensor, connector, and wiring harness routing for melted wires, chafing, moisture intrusion, or corrosion.
Disconnect the T2 sensor and use a multimeter to check the harness side for a short to ground. If the harness tests good, the sensor has failed internally.
Repair steps
Power Down
Ensure the machine is turned off and the key is removed. Allow the exhaust system to cool completely to avoid severe burns.
Harness Repair
If the diagnostic circuit test revealed a short to ground in the wiring, repair the damaged section of the harness or replace the connector terminal.
Sensor Replacement
If the wiring is intact, disconnect the faulty T2 Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor from the wiring harness.
Unthread Sensor
Carefully unthread the sensor from the DPF exhaust piping.
Install New Sensor
Install the new EGT sensor. (Note: If the new sensor does not have anti-seize pre-applied to the threads, apply a small amount of high-temp sensor-safe anti-seize, being extremely careful not to get any on the sensor probe itself). Tighten to OEM specifications.
Reconnect Sensor
Reconnect the sensor to the engine wiring harness.
Verification
Reconnect your diagnostic scan tool, clear the P242C fault code, and start the engine. Monitor the live data to ensure the T2 sensor is now reading a plausible temperature that rises as the exhaust heats up. You may need to perform a forced DPF regeneration to verify the system is fully operational and the engine derate is lifted.
