Kubota P242D – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit High (Bank 1 Sensor 3) / Exhaust gas temperature sensor 2: High
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an abnormally high voltage signal from Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor 2 (T2 sensor) at the DPF outlet, indicating an open circuit or a +B (battery voltage) short circuit in the sensor or its wiring harness.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the EGT Sensor 2 connector and wiring harness for damage, melted insulation, corrosion, or pin contamination. Check for a loose sensor connector on top of the DPF muffler.
Use a diagnostic scan tool to read live data for 'Exhaust Temperature B1S3' or 'DPF Outlet Temp (T2)'. A reading of 0°C (32°F) indicates an open circuit, while 1000°C (1832°F) indicates a short.
Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to check the resistance across the sensor's terminals. An open circuit (infinite resistance/OL) or an internal short indicates a failed sensor.
Verify good ground continuity between the sensor harness ground and the chassis/ECU. Check the signal wire for a short to battery voltage (+B).
Repair steps
Safety First
Turn the key switch to the 'OFF' position. Allow the engine and the DPF muffler assembly to cool completely, as exhaust components reach extreme temperatures.
Locate the Sensor
Locate Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 2 (T2), which is positioned at the outlet of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector for the sensor. Pay attention to the connector color, as Kubota uses color-coding (e.g., Black, Gray, White) to differentiate the EGT sensors in the exhaust stream.
Remove the Sensor
Use a wrench to carefully unscrew the EGT sensor from the DPF housing. If the sensor is seized, apply penetrating oil to avoid stripping the threads in the exhaust housing.
Install the New Sensor
Thread the new EGT sensor into the housing. Tighten to the OEM specified torque (Kubota manuals generally specify 48 to 55 N·m / 36 to 41 lbf·ft for standard exhaust sensors, but verify with your specific engine manual).
Reconnect
Securely click the electrical connector back together, ensuring the locking tab engages so it does not vibrate loose.
Clear Codes
Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the P242D fault code from the ECM.
Test
Start the engine, allow it to warm up, and monitor the live exhaust temperature data to confirm the sensor is reading correctly and the code does not return.
