Manitou A00009 – MMI: I.C. Engine Speed Signal Fault
Issue description
The Man-Machine Interface (MMI) has logged a general 'I.C. Engine Fault' which specifically indicates an anomaly with the engine speed signal. The system is receiving erratic, missing, or out-of-range data regarding the engine's rotational speed. This typically points to a failure in the crankshaft position sensor, its wiring circuit to the Engine Control Unit (ECU), or the ECU itself.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MT series
- MLT series
- MLT 635
- MLT 733
- MLT 737
- MLT-X 737
Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness connected to the engine speed (crankshaft position) sensor for chafing, cuts, corrosion, or loose pins
Perform a cabling check to test the continuity and integrity of the wiring between the engine speed sensor and the engine ECU
Test the engine speed sensor's internal resistance and signal output (AC voltage or square wave) while cranking the engine according to manufacturer specifications
Use a diagnostic scanner (like Manitou iV or Jaltest) to read freeze-frame data and monitor live engine speed data
Repair steps
Confirm the Fault
Verify that the fault code A00009 is active or stored in the machine's diagnostic memory.
Perform Diagnostic Checks
Follow the diagnostic steps listed above (visual inspection, cabling check, sensor check, and scanner diagnostics).
Repair Wiring
If any wiring issues are found (e.g., breaks, shorts, corroded connectors), repair or replace the damaged section of the harness. Ensure all connections are clean and secure.
Replace the Engine Speed Sensor
If the diagnostic checks point to a faulty sensor, replace it with a new, genuine OEM part. The sensor is typically located on the engine block or bell housing, where it can read the rotation of the crankshaft or flywheel.
Clear Fault Codes
After completing the repairs, use a diagnostic tool to clear the A00009 fault code from the system's memory.
Verify the Repair
Start the machine and operate it to ensure the fault code does not reappear. Check for a stable engine speed reading on the diagnostic tool.
Diagnose ECU (if fault persists)
If the fault persists after these steps, the issue may lie within the Engine Control Unit (ECU), and further specialized diagnostics would be required.
