Issue description
The instrument cluster is not receiving the expected data messages from the Electronic Engine Module (EEM), indicating a communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus.

Check the cause
Verify EEM Power and Ground: Check if the engine starts and runs. If the engine runs normally but the dash shows this code, the EEM is powered and functioning, meaning the issue is isolated to the CAN link between the EEM and the Dash. If the engine does not start, the EEM may not be receiving power or ground.
Inspect the CAN BUS Wiring Harness: Trace the CAN network harness between the EEM and the instrument cluster. Look for chafed wires, pinch points, or rodent damage.
Check Connectors: Disconnect the harnesses at both the EEM and the Dash. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-out pins that could cause an open circuit.
Test CAN BUS Resistance: With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms (due to two 120-ohm terminating resistors in parallel). A reading of 120 ohms indicates an open circuit or a missing terminating resistor.
Check Battery Voltage: Ensure the battery is fully charged and the alternator is outputting correct voltage, as low system voltage can cause modules to drop off the CAN network.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Clean and Reseat Connectors
If corrosion or loose connections were found during diagnostics, clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and firmly reseat the connectors at the EEM and the Dash.
Repair Wiring
If a break or short was found in the CAN bus harness, cut out the damaged section and solder in a replacement wire of the same gauge, sealing it with heat-shrink tubing.
Module Replacement (If Necessary)
If the wiring and power/grounds are perfectly intact, the CAN transceiver inside either the Dash or the EEM has likely failed. Replace the faulty module.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the inactive fault codes. Start the tractor and verify that the dash is receiving engine data (RPM, temperature, etc.) and that code 0.0.49 does not return.
