Massey Ferguson 0.0.4A – Dash: CAN BUS Message Issue From EEM Engine Module (Dash)

Issue description

This indicates a communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the system is reporting that expected data messages from the Electronic Engine Module (EEM) are missing, lost, or corrupted before they reach the dashboard display.

Check the cause

  1. Scan for additional codes using a diagnostic scan tool to see if the EEM is communicating or if other modules are reporting CAN timeouts.

  2. Perform a terminating resistance check by disconnecting the battery and measuring resistance between CAN High and CAN Low (should read approximately 60 ohms).

  3. Perform a CAN voltage check with the battery reconnected and key ON (CAN High should be 2.5V-3.5V, CAN Low should be 1.5V-2.5V).

  4. Inspect the wiring harness between the EEM and the Dash for chafed wires, crushed sections, or melted insulation.

  5. Check the EEM and Dash connectors for water ingress, corrosion, or backed-out pins, and verify strong power and ground supplies.

  6. Perform a wiggle test on the wiring harness near the EEM and Dash connectors while monitoring CAN voltage or scan tool data for intermittent drops.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Clean and Reseat Connectors

    Disconnect the main harness connectors at the EEM and the Dash. Spray the pins with a high-quality electrical contact cleaner. Check for spread terminals and carefully tighten them if necessary. Apply dielectric grease to the connector seals (not directly on the pins) to prevent future moisture ingress, and securely reconnect them.

  3. Repair Wiring Faults

    If the diagnostic checks revealed an open or shorted CAN wire, locate the damaged section of the twisted-pair wiring. Cut out the damaged section and solder in a new twisted-pair segment (maintaining the same twist rate to prevent electromagnetic interference). Seal the repair with dual-wall adhesive heat shrink.

  4. Module Testing/Replacement

    If the wiring, terminating resistors, power, and grounds all test perfectly, the fault lies internally within either the EEM (failing to send) or the Dash (failing to receive). Swap the EEM with a known-good test unit (if available and supported by dealer software) to isolate the hardware failure. Replace the faulty module.

  5. Clear Codes and Retest

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and use a dealer diagnostic tool to clear the 0.0.4A fault code. Start the tractor and verify that engine data populates on the dash and the code does not return.
