Issue description

The Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication between the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and the dashboard instrument cluster has been interrupted. The dash is expecting periodic data packets (such as engine speed, temperature, or oil pressure) from the engine ECU, but those messages are timing out or missing entirely.

Check the cause

  1. Verify ECU Power and Ground: Check the fuses, relays, power supply, and ground circuits going to the Engine ECU. If the Engine ECU is not powering on, it cannot broadcast data to the dash.

  2. Measure CAN Resistance: With the key OFF and battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN bus pins at the diagnostic connector. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms (indicating two 120-ohm terminating resistors in parallel).

  3. Isolate the Network: Disconnect modules one by one to isolate the fault if the CAN bus is shorted or corrupted.

  4. Diagnostic Tool Verification: Connect an AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) via a CANUSB interface (or a compatible heavy-duty scanner like Jaltest) to see if the diagnostic tool can communicate with the Engine ECU. If the tool can talk to the ECU but the dash cannot, the issue is isolated to the dash or the wiring branch going to the dash.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Inspect the Harness

    Visually inspect the wiring harness along the entire CAN bus path between the Engine ECU (often a SISU EEM3 or EEM4 module mounted on the engine block) and the Dash module. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points.

  3. Check Connectors

    Disconnect the main harness connectors at both the Engine ECU and the back of the Dash module. Inspect for moisture, corrosion, backed-out pins, or bent terminals.

  4. Repair Wiring

    If the CAN twisted-pair wiring is damaged, repair it using proper soldering and heat-shrink techniques to maintain the twist rate (which prevents electromagnetic interference).

  5. Clean and Reconnect

    Clean the connector pins with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease if recommended by the OEM, and securely seat the connectors.

  6. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and use the AGCO EDT software to clear the inactive fault codes.

  7. Module Replacement/Programming

    If the wiring is 100% intact and the ECU has verified power/ground but still fails to communicate, the Engine ECU or Dash Module has suffered an internal hardware failure and will need to be replaced and flashed with the correct software (End Of Line programming) by a dealer.
