Massey Ferguson 00.02.40 – Dash: CAN BUS Message Issue (Dash)
Issue description
This code indicates a communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, it means that messages are either missing, corrupted, or failing to transmit/receive properly between the dashboard module and the rest of the machine's control modules. When CAN communication fails, the machine cannot share vital sensor data, which can lead to warning lights, missing display data, or system derates.

Check the cause
Verify battery health and check for voltage drops during cranking to rule out weak batteries or poor shared grounds causing the Dash module to brown out.
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the back of the dash for chafed wiring, crushed sections, water ingress, corroded connectors, or loose/pushed-back pins.
Probe the CAN High and CAN Low lines at the dash connector with a multimeter or oscilloscope to check for open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to 12V power.
Measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins with the battery disconnected to verify proper termination (should typically read around 60 ohms).
Verify that the Dash module is receiving steady 12V power and has a clean ground.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Access the Dash
Remove the instrument panel cladding/trim to access the rear of the dashboard module.
Clean and Reseat Connectors
Disconnect the main harness from the dash. Spray the connections with electrical contact cleaner. Carefully inspect the pins to ensure none are bent or pushed back into the housing.
Repair Harness
If you found chafed wires or a short during diagnostics, cut out the damaged section and splice in new wire using solder and marine-grade heat shrink tubing.
Replace the Dash Module
If the wiring, power, ground, and CAN termination all test perfectly but the dash still fails to communicate, the internal CAN transceiver in the dash has likely failed. Remove the mounting screws, extract the old dash, and install the replacement unit.
Reassemble and Reboot
Reconnect the harness and battery. Perform a "cold boot" (cycle the key completely off, wait, and turn it back on) to allow the modules to re-initialize and establish CAN communication. Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool.
