Massey Ferguson 00.02.44 – Dash Module: CAN BUS Message Issue (Dash)

Communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus between the dashboard instrument cluster and other control modules on the tractor. The system is failing to send or receive expected data packets to/from the dash display.

   Check for accompanying codes: CAN BUS communication failures often trigger a cascade of codes across multiple modules. Check if the Engine ECU or Transmission TCU are also reporting communication losses.

   Inspect grounds (earth straps): Check battery negative to chassis and engine block to chassis frame. A corroded or loose earth strap can cause voltage drops that disrupt CAN communication.

   Test CAN-H and CAN-L lines: Using a multimeter, check the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the dash connector and diagnostic port. Verify the CAN bus terminating resistors are intact (typically reading ~60 ohms across CAN-H and CAN-L with the battery disconnected).

   Inspect the dash wiring harness: Look for chafing, melted wires (especially near the key switch), or loose connector pins at the back of the instrument cluster.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the negative battery terminal before servicing any CAN bus wiring or removing the dash module.

   Access the Dash Module

   Remove the steering column cowling and dash trim panels to expose the rear of the instrument cluster.

   Repair/Replace Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire, short, or damaged connector in the dash wiring harness, splice and heat-shrink the repair, or replace the harness section entirely.

   Replace the Dash Module

   If the wiring and voltages test perfectly but the dash module is internally shorted or failing to broadcast messages, unbolt the cluster, disconnect the main harness, and install a replacement instrument panel.

   Clear Codes and Verify

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and navigate to the diagnostic menu to select the “Clear Codes” or “Reset Codes” option. Start the tractor and monitor the dash to ensure the code does not return and all gauges sweep/function normally.
