Massey Ferguson 00.02.49 – Dash (Instrument Panel / Dashboard): CAN BUS Message Issue From EEM (Dash)

A communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The dashboard is expecting regular status messages from the Engine Electronic Module (EEM), but those messages are either missing, timing out, or corrupted.

   Verify battery voltage and alternator output, as low voltage or voltage spikes can cause CAN bus modules to temporarily shut down or drop messages.

   Look for related CAN bus fault codes (such as D164 or D149) which confirm a physical bus issue.

   Inspect the wiring harness connecting the EEM to the Dash Control Center for chafed wires, especially where the harness routes from the cab to the engine bay.

   Check the connectors at the back of the instrument cluster and at the EEM for moisture, corrosion, or backed-out pins.

   With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port or dash connector (should read approximately 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a broken terminating resistor or wiring).

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts while working on the CAN network.

   Access the Modules

   Remove the necessary trim panels to access the rear of the instrument cluster (Dash) and locate the EEM on the engine.

   Clean and Reseat Connectors

   Disconnect the harness connectors at both the Dash and the EEM. Spray the contacts with a high-quality electronic contact cleaner. Ensure no pins are bent.

   Test Harness Continuity

   Using a multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires end-to-end between the EEM and the Dash.

   Repair Wiring

   If continuity is broken, or if there is a short to ground/power, locate the break in the harness and repair it using proper soldering and heat-shrink tubing.

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Reconnect all harnesses securely, ensuring the locking tabs click into place. Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition to the ON position, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes.

   Module Replacement (If Necessary)

   If the wiring tests perfectly and the code immediately returns, the CAN transceiver inside either the Instrument Cluster or the EEM has likely failed. The Dash is the most common failure point for this specific code. Replace the cluster and program it to the tractor if required.
