Massey Ferguson 00.02.4E – Dash: Issue With Steering Valve Mounted On Steering Orbitrol Unit

The controller has detected an electrical anomaly (such as an open circuit, short to ground, or out-of-range signal) in the circuit for the electronic steering valve solenoid mounted on the hydrostatic steering orbitrol unit. This valve is responsible for distributing auxiliary hydraulic oil to the front axle steering cylinder.

   Inspect the electrical connector at the steering valve (on the orbitrol unit under the dash) for corrosion, loose pins, or moisture.

   Check the wiring harness for rub points or breaks between the valve and the Dash controller.

   Use a multimeter to check the solenoid coil resistance on the steering valve.

   Test the harness for an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power.

   Verify that the Dash is outputting the correct supply voltage to the sensors/valves.

   Ensure the auxiliary hydraulic system has adequate fluid, as low fluid or air can cause erratic steering behavior.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

   Access the Unit

   Remove the steering wheel and the plastic steering column cowlings/covers to access the orbitrol steering unit, which is mounted at the base of the steering column.

   Disconnect Electricals

   Unplug the electrical harness connector from the steering valve solenoid.

   Disconnect Hydraulics

   Thoroughly clean the area around the hydraulic fittings to prevent dirt from entering the open system. Mark all hydraulic lines (P, T, L, R) before disconnecting them, as porting orientation is critical. Cap the lines immediately to prevent fluid loss.

   Remove the Unit

   Unbolt the mounting hardware securing the orbitrol unit to the steering column bracket and remove the assembly. (Note: If only replacing the electrical valve block, unbolt it directly from the orbitrol body).

   Installation

   Mount the new steering valve/orbitrol unit. Do not attempt to disassemble the internal orbitrol gearset yourself unless factory-trained, as timing the orbitrol is crucial; incorrect assembly will cause the steering to lock or violently spin.

   Reconnection

   Reconnect the hydraulic lines to their respective marked ports and plug in the electrical connector.

   Reassembly

   Reinstall the steering column covers and the steering wheel.

   Bleed the System

   Reconnect the battery. Top up the hydraulic fluid. Start the engine (or crank it with the fuel stop engaged) and turn the steering wheel continuously lock-to-lock several times to purge all trapped air from the steering cylinder and orbitrol valve.

    Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic tool or the Dash menu to clear the 00.02.4E fault code and test drive.
